This fern has a short tufted or creeping rhizome with two types (dimorphic) fronds one with lobes the other with narrow segments. Both are mid green, semi erect and forming a dense tufted appearance and the fertile fromds appear during late summer.

Doodia heterophylla is naturally found in Australia growing in south-eastern Queensland along moist creek banks in and over rocks or in open forests. It prefers a protected semi shaded position with reliable moisture and moderately fertile well drained soil in a shaded to a semi-shaded protected position and is frost and drought tender.
This Rasp Fern is grown for its foliage and is planted in woodland settings along water courses and found in rock crevices and is suitable for gully plantings in coastal or mountainous regions establishing in 2 to 3 years. It is suitable for tropical or small gardens, shaded rockeries or borders. It is restricted in its natural habitat and is not commonly cultivated and may be difficult to obtained, requiring a specialist nursery. ID 2288
