This large tree has an upright trunk with almost horizontal branches that forms a dense conical habit. It has pendant mid-green lanced-shaped leaves and the pale orange-yellow highly perfumed cup-shaped flowers appear solitary in late summer.

Michelia champacais naturally found in the Himalayan foothills growing in well drained fertile moist soils in an open to protected position and is drought and frost tender.

Champaca is grown for its fragrant flowers and its habit. It is planted as a specimen in parks and gardens or along borders. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and is planted in woodland gardens.
