This large coniferous tree has an upright trunk with smooth purplish bark and spreading branches that form a conical crown with age. It has leathery dark green elliptical leaves and the small male and female flowers are followed by bluish fruit in autumn.

Podocarpus nagiis naturally found from east Asia to southern China and central to south-west Japan growing in dry mountain sides in woodlands and along streams to an altitude of 1,200m (3,600ft).
It tolerates a range of sandy to clay loams in an open sunny position prefering hot humid summers and is drought and frost tolerant.
The Broad Leaf Podacarpus is grown for its habit and foliage. It is planted in parks or large gardens on embankments and along water courses. It is also used as a lawn specimen tree establishing in 3 to 5 years and is suitable to coastal or mountainous regions. The timber is used in construction. ID 2272
