This tree has a slender greyish trunk with flaking bark and spreading branches that form a narrow rounded crown. It has large divided leaves with glossy green leaflets and the yellow trumpet-shaped flowers appear in clusters during autumn.

Markhamia luteais naturally found in Africa on the plateaux of Lake Victoria in Kenya growing along river margins in well drained, fertile moist light soils in an open sunny position and is frost and drought tender.

The Steeple Tree is grown for its flowers and its narrow habit. It is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen tree for a tropical effect or as a street tree and avenue planting. It is suitable for coastal or inland regions establishing in 3 to 5 years and in cool climates it may be grown in bright conservatories. The timber is used in construction in its native region.
