This feather palm has a greyish bottle-shaped trunk that is closely ringed and swollen at the base up to 700mm (2ft) in diameter. The sparse crown has up to 6-dark green arching fronds and the small yellowish flowers appear in late summer.

Hypohorbe lagenicaulisis naturally found in forests on the Mascarene Islands, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. It grows from sea level to an altitude of 700m (20,000ft) in well drained volcanic or limestone bases, moist soils.
It prefers a humid protected, semi shaded position but can tolerate full sun and is drought and frost tender but is salt tolerant.
The Bottle Palm is grown for its habit and is planted around water features in tropical gardens or in bright conservatories in cold climates. It is suitable for coastal or mountainous regions establishing in 4 to 7 years and is grown for its architectural aspect in small or tropical gardens along borders or as a potted plant. ID 2265
