This large deciduous tree has an upright trunk with grey brown bark and spreading, drooping branches that form a broad rounded crown. It has dark green lobed leaves that turn yellowish brown during autumn and the editable acorns appear in autumn.

In the wild the tree can attain a height of 30m (100ft) but under cultivation it is commonly smaller growing to 15m (45ft) tall.
