This upright shrub has spreading branches with grey-brown bark and forms a compact rounded crown. It has dark glossy green pointed oblong leaves and bell-shaped dark red flowers appear in small terminal clusters during spring.

Pittosporum fairchildiiis naturally found on The Great Island in the Three Kings Island group in the North Island of New Zealand growing in scrubland.

It prefers a well drained moderately fertile moist soil in an open sunny position and is mildly frost resistant but drought tender.

This Pittosporum is grown for its bushy habit and is planted in small gardens along borders for screening or can be trained to form a hedge. It is suitable for coastal regions and establishes in 2 to 4 years. It is also suitable for commercial sites, courtyards or along driveways and on embankments. ID 2241

It is planted as far south as Christchurch in the South Island.
