This variable shrub is commonly cultivated as the hybrid 'Expansa'. This dwarf plant has thick ridged horizontal branches that form a dense mound. It has scale-like dark green leaves that lay flat along the stems and the small cones appear in spring.

It is suitable for inland or coastal regions establishing in 3 to 5 years and attaining a width of 1.5m (5ft) in ten years.
