This deciduous tree is upright with arching branches that have green and white striped bark and forms a compact rounded crown. The dark green lobed leaves turn red during autumn and the small greenish flowers appear in upright clusters during spring.

Acer rufinerveis naturally found in Japan growing on mountain sides up to an elevation of 2,500m (8,000ft). It prefers a well drained moist fertile soil in a protected sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

The Snake-bark Maple is grown for its attractive bark and its autumn colour. It is planted in parks and gardens as a lawn specimen and not normally attaining its mature height under cultivation. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and is suitable for cool climate regions and the cultivars are commonly cultivated. ID 2195

Note:
The new growth is bluish-white, a distinguishing feature of the species and the branches and trunk form whitish wrinkly lines giving a snake skin-like appearance.
