This upright tree has many spreading branches that form a dense rounded habit. The grey-brown trunk is up to 90cm (2ft) wide and the dark oblong green leaves are whitish underneath. During summer clusters of flowers with crimson stamens appear.

Metrosideros kermadecensisis naturally found in the north and south island of New Zealand and in the Raoul Island from sea level to 500m (1,500ft).

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in fertile moist, well drained soils tending acid and is drought tender but light frost tolerant.

Kermadec Pohutukawa is grown for its dense habit and its flowers. It is suitable for coastal regions and is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen or along borders for screening. The plant is also grown containers when young and establishes in 2 to 4 years, and may be trimmed to form a hedge. ID 2188

Note:
The tree can form a large trunk and the branches produce aerial roots very simular to Metrosideros excelsain habit and environmental requirements but is less hardy requiring some protection in cold regions.
