This vigorous sub-tropical tree has a light grey warty trunk with spreading drooping branches that form a rounded crown. It has glossy green oblong, pointed leaflets and the saucer-shaped greenish flowers appear in winter followed by apple-like fruit.

Casimiroa edulisis naturally found in the highlands of Mexico to Central America at an altitude of 900m (1,500ft), but also performs well at sea level and is planted in Florida and Hawaii, USA.

It prefers a humus rich moist, well drained sandy loam in an open sunny position and is drought tolerant but frost tender.

Mexican Apple is grown for its habit and its fruit. It is planted in tropical settings, parks or gardens as a shade tree or in shrub borders for screening.
