This deciduous shrub to small tree has an upright to spreading habit with slender tangled branches forming a rounded crown. It has small rounded leaves that turn red-gold during autumn and the tiny flowers appear in a spike during spring.

Nothofagus gunniiis naturally found in Australia growing in Tasmania in cool temperate rainforests or the adjoining sub alpine regions above 900m (10,000ft).

It prefers a medium to heavy moist soil in a semi shaded exposed position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

Tanglefoot Beech is grown for its autumn colour and is planted in small gardens or large rockeries. It is suitable for cool mountain regions and establishes in 4 to 6 years and is also planted in botanical collections or bright conservatories and used as a spill over above retaining walls. ID 2175

Note:
In higher altitudes the plant becomes dwarfed and the growth rate is very slow.
