This shield fern has tufted rhizome that is covered in brown scales and accompanied with old broken stems forming a bushy mounded clump. It has variable dark green divided triangular-shaped fronds that are arching and the fertile fronds appear in summer.

It prefers a shaded to semi-shaded protected position with moderately well drained humus rich, moist to wet soils with wind, frost and drought protection.
The Shiny Shield Fern is grown for it foliage and is planted around water features in small gardens and rockeries for a tropical effect. It is also used in woodland settings in coastal or mountainous regions growning along creek embankments establishing from division in 1 to 2 years.
