This upright tree to large shrub has spreading, gnarled branches that form a rounded crown. It has dull green oblong leaves that turn yellow during autumn and the bowl-shaped pinkish tinged white flowers appear singularly from spring to summer.

Mespilus germanicais naturally found from south-east Europe to Iran growing in woodlands in mountainous regions. It tolerates most well drained, fertile soils in an open sunny position and is drought tender but frost tolerant.
Medlar is grown for its habit, autumn colour and its fruits. It is planted in parks and gardens as a lawn specimen or in shrub borders and woodland settings. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and is suitable for cool mountain gardens. ID 2152
