This large tree has a solitary trunk with deeply furrowed light brown bark and forms a slender conical habit. The glossy dark green leaves are arranged comb-like along the stems and the cones produced are deep purple.

It prefers a semi-shaded to full sun open position and grows in well to moderately drained sandy to clay loams with a pH 5-7 and is frost tolerant but dislikes drought or high temperatures.
The Western Himalayan Fir is a large tree that is grown for its conical habit and attractive foliage. It is planted in parks and large gardens as a specimen establishing in 5 to 7 years. It is suitable for river side plantings in cool climates but may be difficult to obtain. ID 2144
