This large coniferous tree has a large cylindrical trunk with spreading branches forming a broad conical habit when young becoming columnar when matures. The needle-like leaves are grey green to blue green and the light brown cones are pendulous.

Pseudotsuga menziesiiis naturally found from the Alaskan border through British Columbia to the western coast of Mexico growing in forests on well drained deep fertile, moist soils that are neutral to slightly acid. It prefers an open position with high humidity, with strong wind and drought protection but is frost tolerant.
Douglas Fir is grown for its stately habit and for its timber. It is planted in woodland settings or large gardens as a specimen and in botanical collections. It established in 3 to 5 years and is suitable for coastal or mountainous regions. ID 2138
