This perennial shrub has upward spreading stems from a lignotuber and forms an open rounded habit. It has dull green ovate leaves and the scarlet tube-shaped flowers appear from winter to spring.

This is the most cultivated species in the genus tolerating most well drained soils.but responds to drier well drained soils under cultivation.
