This rhizomatous perennial has upright to decumbent, pubescent stems that form a rounded habit. It has mid green lanced-shaped leaves and the pale-blue fragrant flowers appear in clusters above the foliage during late summer.

Aster amellusis naturally found from central to eastern Europe, western Russia and Turkey growing in thickets or dry woodlands along the coast and in the mountains.

It prefers well drained fertile moist calcareous to stony soils in an open sunny position and is frost tolerant and mildly drought resistant.
