This slow growing medium size coniferous tree has a trunk with brown flaky bark and horizontal branches that forms a broad conical habit. The dark glossy green narrow leaves have a fern-like appearance and during summer purplish fruit is produced.

It grows in well drained organic rich moist soils in a protected shaded to sunny position and is drought and frost tender.

It is also grown in tropical settings establishing n 5 to 7 years but rarely attains its full height under cultivation.
