This large green to bluish green flat topped globular cactus is up to 300 mm (1ft) wide with 10 to 30 ribs with prominent tubercles. It has brown to yellowish arching pungent spines and the diurnal pinkish-white funnel-shaped flowers appear during mid summer.

It prefers a very well drained moderately fertile sandy gravely soil with ample organic matter and is drought and light frost tolerant.
