This clump forming spherical grey-green cactus matures to a cylindrical woolly topped habit, up to 120 mm (4µ in) diameter with 13-24 ribs. It has whitish pungent spines and the diurnal yellow cup-shaped flowers appear during summer.

Copiapoa krainzianais naturally found in South America from Antofagasta to northern Taltal in Chile growing on the arid coastal mountain rocky slopes from an altitude of 500 to 2,000 m (1,550-6,200 ft). It is also found in the high mountains to 700 m (22,000 ft) in an altitude.
This cactus prefers a semi-shaded to full sun, open to exposed position, facing north and grows on very well drained stony soils.
It is drought tolerant but is frost tender
Chascon is grown for its habit, hairy appearance and flowers. It is planted in arid gardens or cactus collections as a specimen and can be grown in pots, under glass in cold climates. It is suitable for coastal and mountainous regions establishing in 4-6 years and is long lived. ID 2069
Note:
This is an extremely dry region, with less than 100 mm per year and the plant obtains water from condensation from coastal fog, which also shades the plant from direct sun.
