This epiphytic perennial forms funnel-shaped rosettes of stiff arching leaves. The strap-like leaves are yellow-green with wavy horizontal purplish markings and the yellow tube-shaped flowers are arranged on a tall cluster that appears from the centre.

Vriesea hieroglyphicais naturally found in southern Brazil growing on trees in forests or as a terrestrial in the understorey. It prefers hot humid conditions and grows in leaf mould and decaying organic matter in bright, indirect light with wind, frost and drought protection.

This perennial is grown for its attractive foliage and its flowers. It is used in tropical gardens in trees as a specimen or may be grown in the soil as an understorey plant. It is commonly a container plant in collections and establishes from division in 3 to 5 years. It is also grown on old logs in bushland gardens or used around a water feature for a tropical effect.
