This perennial succulent is upright and branched with a variable shrubby habit. The grey-brown stems are rounded, thick and covered in stiff thorns. It has slender reddish-green leaves and the small funnel-shaped yellow flowers appear in summer.

This succulent shrub is grown for its unusual form and its flowers. It is planted in arid or rock gardens as a specimen or as a container plant under glass in cold climates.
