This scrambling fern has a long-creeping rhizome up to 6mm (¥in) wide and is covered in semi-erect persistent brown scales. The variable dark green leaves may be lobed and form a tangled mound on the ground or over fallen logs.

Microsorum scandensis naturally found in Australia from Queensland to New South Wales and eastern Victoria growing on the coast and in the adjoining tablelands. It is also found in New Zealand, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island growing on the rainforest floor over rocks or on fallen tree trunks and into trees.
It prefers moist humus rich, well drained fertile soil in a protected semi-shaded to bright filtered ligh humid position and is wind and drought tender but frost tolerant.
Fragrant Fern is grown for its scrambling habit and its foliage. It is planted along water courses in coastal or mountainous rainforests regions or used in small gardens, rockeries and ferneries as a specimen plant. It is also suitable for gully planting and as a container plant establishing in 1 to 2 years. ID 2045

This species is very simular toMicrosorum pustulatumwhich is more commonly found at higher altitudes in a cooler climate.
The rhizome is brittle and the leaves produce a scent that may be indiscreet.
