This shrub has a short trunk with upright spreading greyish grooved spiny stems that form an open bushy habit. It has dark green oblong leaves that soon fall and the red tube-shaped flowers appear in a spike-like cluster from spring to summer.

Fouquieria diguetiiis naturally found in North America growing in Mexico, (southern Baja California to coastal Sonora and Sinaloa) growing on rocky hillsides and alluvial plains, extending into desert regions from sea level to an altitude of 867m (2,844 ft).

It prefers an open to expose sunny position and grows in very well-drained poor to moderately fertile sandy stony soil with a pH range from 5.0 to 7.8 and is very drought and mildly frost tolerant.

Adam's Tree is grown for its bright red flowers and its drought hardness. It is planted in small or arid gardens as a specimen or along borders and is used as pedestrian barrier in public places.

It is also planted rockeries, tubs and planter boxes requiring little care. It is suitable for coastal and low mountain regions and establishes in 3-4 years and is moderately long lived. Under ideal conditions it will form a small tree providing a protected habitat for small birds. ID 2038
