This clump forming barrel cactus produces numerous offsets from the base each with 8-ribs. It has yellow grey needle-like spines and the diurnal yellow to orange funnel-shaped flowers appear towards the top centre of the plant during summer.

Ferocactus robustusis naturally found in southern to central Mexico (Puebia) growing on hot dry rocky hillsides in very well-drained stony soils. It prefers an open sunny to slightly shaded position and is drought and frost tolerant.
