This large tree has furrowed blackish bark and upright slender branches that droop forming an open rounded crown. It has grey-green lanced-shaped leaves and the small white flowers appear in clusters from spring to summer followed by woody capsules.

It grows in a range of moderately fertile well drained sandy to clay loams and tolerates drought or high temperatures and frost.
The Narrow-leaves Ironbark is grown for its tolerance of a wide range of conditions and can be planted on the coast or inland. It is used as a wind break, shade tree or for roadside plantings and establishes in 2 to 4 years.
