This epiphytic or lithophytic fern has a long-creeping rhizome that is covered in spreading dark scales. It has upright leathery dark green fronds that are variable in size and form a leafy clump and the fertile fronds appear during late summer.

Dictymia brownii is endemic to Australia from northern Queensland on the Atherton Tablelands and extending to New South Wales.

It grows on fallen logs and over moist rocks as an understorey plant in gullies and can be terrestrial growing on well drained humus rich soils with wind, frost and drought protection.

This epiphytic fern is grown for its lush leaves. It is planted in tropical gardens around water features or on fallen logs as a specimen. It is suitable for coastal or mountainous regions establishing from division in 2 to 3 years and is also grown in hanging baskets as a fernery specimen. ID 2026
