This fern has an erect tufted rhizome that is covered in broad, brown scales and old stem bases. It has a spreading crown of semi-erect dark green strap-like fronds that are variable and often lobed and the fertile fronds are slender appearing in summer.

Blechnum patersoniiis naturally found in Australia from Queensland to New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. It is also found in the Fijian Islands growing in shaded damp protected positions in forests, along creeks on well drained humus rich moist soils with wind, frost and drought protection.

The Strap Water Fern is grown for its foliage and is planted along water courses for a tropical effect in small gardens and used in rock crevices or planted in shady borders.
