This suckering deciduous shrub has many slender drooping glaborous branches that form a dense bushy habit. It has mid green deltoid leaves that turn orange-yellow in autumn and the creamy-white cup-shaped flowers appear in a cluster during late spring.

Stephanandra incisais naturally found in Japan growing in the lower mountains of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. It also grows in Korea and Taiwan forming thickets from sea level to an altitude of 867m (2,844 ft).

It prefers an open sunny position but will tolerate some shade and grows in well drained organic rich moist sandy to clay loam that is tending acidic with a pH range of 4-6.5. It is frost and cold tolerant but drought tender.

Lace Shrub is grown for its bushy growth habit and its autumn foliage colour. It is planted in small gardens in mixed shrub borders or trimmed to form an informal hedge. It is also planted in woodland settings as a specimen and can be grown in large containers. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions and establishes in 3-4 years. ID 2011
