This large deciduous tree has a grey-brown trunk with spreading arching-branches that form a rounded crown. It has mid green toothed oval leaves and the small bell-shaped reddish flowers appear in early spring, followed by greenish winged seeds.

Ulmus minoris naturally found from south-west Asia to North Africa and Europe growing in an open sunny position on well drained fertile loams and is drought tender and frost tolerant.

The European Field Elm is a large tree that is grown for its habit and autumn colour. It is planted in parks or large gardens as a lawn specimen for shade or is used in woodland settings. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and is long lived. It is suitable for inland or mountain regions tolerating cold conditions. ID 2004
