This small deciduous tree is upright with ascending spreading branches that form an irregular rounded crown with deeply fissured black brown bark. It has glossy dark green triangular-shaped leaves that turn yellow brown in autumn.

Quercus marilandicais naturally found in North Americafrom New York to Florida and Texas growing in poor to moderately fertile well drained, sandy loams. It prefers an open sunny position in a well drained moderately fertile drier sandy loam, disliking lime and is drought and frost tolerant.
Blackjack Oak is grown for its unusual foliage and small spreading habit. It is planted in parks as a lawn specimen or in woodland gardens. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and is suitable for inland gardens in warmer regions, but is not commonly cultivated as an ornamental. ID 2002
