This large coniferous tree has a straight trunk with flaky greyish bark and spreading branches to ground level that form a domed crown. It has dull green thick leathery lanced-shaped leaves and the male and female cones appear during spring.

Agathis australisis naturally found in New Zealand from North Cape to Kawhia and the Bay of Plenty growing in forests on the lowlands and adjoining hills.

It prefers well drained fertile soil that retains moisture in an open sunny position and tolerates frost and wind but is drought tender.

The New Zealand Kauri Pine is a large slow growing tree that is planted for its majestic habit and foliage. It is planted in large gardens or parks as a lawn specimen or in group plantings in a woodland setting. It establishes in 3 to 6 years and attains a height of 9m (27ft) in 30 years. It is suitable for a wet climate and is used as a pot plant when young. ID 1897

Note:
The light timber is straight grained and durable and the trunk grows to 3m (10ft) in diameter. It is used for general construction, housed, boats and joinery and was extensively used during early colonisation depleting reserves.
