This pale green cylindrical cactus has 12-20 thick ribs forming a columnar habit when mature. The ribs are lined with red tipped greyish pungent spines and the yellow funnel-shaped flowers appear at the top of the plant during summer.

Ferocactus peninsulaeis naturally found in southern Baja California, North America growing on rocky hillsides in an open sunny position in moderately fertile well drained sandy-stony soils. It tolerates drought and high temperatures but is frost tender.

This Barrel Cactus is grown for its habit, spines and flowers. It is planted in small or arid gardens and in cactus collections as a specimen. It is suitable for or inland and coastal regions establishing in 3-5 years and is moderately long lived. This cactus is also suitable for containers and is grown under glass in cold climates.
