This perennial cactus branches from the base with erect grey green stems that are up to 80mm (3in) thick with up to 25 ribs. It is densely covered in silver-white spines and the red tube-shaped flowers appear at night during late summer.

Cleistocactus strausiiis naturally found in Bolivia, South America growing in mountainous regions. It prefers very well drained moderately fertile soil in an open sunny position and tolerates drought or high temperatures but is frost tender.
