This suckering palm has slender glossy green cane-like up turned stems up to 12mm (½in) wide and forms a clump with an open crown. It has divided fronds with dark green leaflets and the small creamy-white cup-shaped flowers appear in a cluster followed by small rounded fruit.

It prefers a humus rich moist, well drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic in an open sunny, to semi shaded position and is moderately drought and frost tolerant.
The Mexican Bamboo Palm is grown for its clumping habit and attractive foliage. It is planted in parks and gardens for a tropical effect or as a screen along borders. It may also be grown in containers and establishes in 3 to 5 years. It tolerates a shaded position and a cooler climate and is suitable for planting along water courses.ID 1822
