This semi evergreen terrestrial orchid has ovoid pseudobulbs and forms a clump with upright foliage. It has large lanced-shaped mid-green leaves and the red-brown nodding flowers that appear in a raceme during summer on a tall lax stem.

Phaius tankervilleaeis naturally found from China to northern India, south-east Asia and northern Australia growing in swampy, damp locations in well drained organic rich moist soils. It prefers a sunny protected position and is frost and drought tender.

Nun's Orchid is grown for its flowers and is used in tropical settings. It is also commonly grown as a container plant for collectors and as glasshouse specimen in cool climates. It establishes from division in 2 to 3 years and there are many variations of the species. It is also suitable for small gardens or sub tropical settings. ID 1802

The squat pseudobulb is 60mm (2½in) long and produces several leaves.
