This rhizomatous sub-shrub is upright and branched with reddish stems that form an open rounded habit. It has large dark green elliptical leaves and the pendant trumpet-shaped reddish flowers appear solitary during early summer.

This perennial is grown for its flowers and is planted in containers and a house plant or used as an understorey plant in tropical settings.
