This perennial sub-shrub has a short bulbous trunk with rosettes of stiff linear blue-green leaves and forms a clump. It has bluish funnel-shaped flowers that appear in a large cluster on a tall stem above the foliage during late spring and attracts birds.

Puya berteronianais naturally found in central Chile growing on rocky slopes up to an altitude of 2,000m (6,500 ft) tolerating cool and dry conditions.

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in most well drained moderately fertile soils and is drought tolerant and mildly frost resistant.

Puya is a bromeliad that is grown for its flowers and stiff foliage. It is planted in raised garden beds, rockeries or as a container plant. It establishes from division in 3 to 5 years requiring little care. It is suitable for dry hot conditions, inland and on the coast and humming birds pollinates the flowers. ID 1765

Note:
During winter the soil must not become wet, as the plant will suffer.
This plant is not commonly cultivated and may be difficult to obtain.
