This deciduous tree or large shrub has a solitary trunk with multicoloured peeling bark and spreading branches that form a broad conical habit. It has dark green oblong leaves that turn yellow in autumn and the small white fragrant flowers appear in mid spring.

The Manchurian Cherry is grown for its flowers and its colourful bark. It is used in ornamental plantings in parks and gardens as a specimen or in avenues as a summer shade tree.
