This deciduous tree has a dark brown trunk with spreading thorny branches that form a rounded crown. It has dark glossy green oblong leaves that turn yellow during autumn and the tiny yellowish cup-shaped flowers appear in a raceme during spring.

Maclura pomiferais naturally found in central and southern USA from Oklahoma, south to Texas growing in moderately fertile well-drained soils in an open sunny position and is drought tender but mildly frost resistant.

Hedge-apple is grown for it habit and is planted in parks and gardens as a lawn specimen for summer shade or it may be trimmed to form a hedge along borders and establishes in 3 to 5 years and is suitable fort coastal and low-mountain regions. The bark is used for tanning leather and the flexible timber used for archery bows. ID 1744

The plant has milky sap and the bark forms long fissures.
