Hardiness zones 3 to 9

Juniperus scopulorumis naturally found in North America and is widely distributed along the Rocky Mountains growing in a variety of sites from exposed rocky outcrops in altitudes up to 2,800m (9000ft).

It tolerates a wide range of well-drained moderately fertile, drier soil types and grows in a open sunny to protected position and is frost and drought tolerant.

The Rocky Mountain Juniper is a hardy conifer that is grown for its habit and is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen or used in woodland settings for foliage contrast. It establishes in 4 to 6 years and is suitable for cool mountain regions. Some of the cultivars may be grown in small gardens as specimen plants.ID 1740

Note:
The tree produces abundant fruit but natural reproduction is sparse. It is a slow growing tree but is long lived, up to 300 years and the light timber is used for fuel, pencils or packing cases. The native North Americans used the fruit medicinally for illnesses such as kidney complaints, syphilis and dandruff.

At high altitudes it forms a bushy shrub and in lower areas it grows to a rounded tree that is very drought resistant. In protected positions the branches become arched and the plant is more spreading.
