This upright spreading tree has a trunk with rough grey-brown bark and ascending branches that form a rounded crown. The large fern-like leaves have oval leaflets that turn yellow during autumn and the small fragrant star-shaped flowers appear in spring.

Gymnocladus dioicusis naturally found in eastern North America growing in moist woodlands on fertile well-drained soils and tolerating limestone based soils. It prefers a sunny wind protected position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
The Kentucky Coffee Tree is grown for its habit and foliage. It is planted in parks or large gardens as a specimen or used in woodland settings for foliage contrast. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and not normally attaining its natural mature height under cultivation. It is grown throughout the world in temperate climates including southern England during winter.
