This coniferous tree has a solitary upright trunk with reddish-grey, flaky bark and tiered branching that forms a conical habit that is broad when young. It has flat dark green needle-like leaves and purplish-blue female cones appear in spring.

Abies homolepisis naturally found in central Japan growing on mountain slopes and in the valleys commonly in temperate rainforests at an altitude from 700 m to 2200 m(7217 ft).

It prefers cool humid summers in an open sunny position and is drought tender but heavy snow and pollution tolerant. It grows in deep well-drained, rich moist slightly acidic soils with a pH 5-7.

The Nikko Fir is a large conifer that is grown for its habit and is planted in large gardens or parks as a lawn specimen establishing in 3 to 5 years. It may also be grown metropolitan areas tolerating pollution and is an excellent feature tree in a Japanese garden. It is suitable for cool mountain regions. ID 1721
