This deciduous tree has an upright grey-brown trunk with spreading branches that form a narrow rounded crown. The glossy dark green leaves are broad lanced-shape and turn yellowish in autumn and the pendulous yellow male flowers appear in spring.

Quercus muchlenbergiiis naturally found in central and eastern North America, throughout the Midwest up to the Great Lakes growing in woodlands on moist fertile well-drained soils in an open sunny position and is drought and frost tolerant.

Chinquapin Oak is grown for its habit and attractive foliage. It is planted in parks or in medium size gardens as a lawn specimen or for summer shade and for its autumn of foliage colour. It is suitable for inland and low mountain regions establishing in 3 to 5 years and is long-lived. It is not commonly cultivated commercially and may be difficult to obtain requiring a specialist nursery. ID 1701
