This tree has an upright trunk that is normally forked near the base with erect branches that form a rounded crown. The divided leaves have bright green rounded leaflets that turn yellow in autumn and the white pea-like flowers appear in late spring.

Cladrastis luteais naturally found in North America from North Carolina to Alabama and Missouri growing in well-drained fertile loams but will tolerate heaver soil types. It prefers a open sunny position and is drought tender but frost tolerant and requires wind protection.
The American Yellow Wood is grown for its autumn colour and is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen for shade or as an avenue tree. It is also planted along watercourses in woodland gardens establishing in 3 to 5 years. It normally grows smaller under cultivation and dislikes exposed positions.ID 1672
Note:
The branches are brittle and may snap off in strong winds and when first cut the wood is bright yellow and a die can be produced from the sap. Mature trees can have a trunk diameter of up to 1m (3ft).
