This large deciduous suckering shrub has sparsely spreading branches forming a flattish toped crown. The divided leaves are have dark green oblong leaflets that turn orange-red during autumn and the male yellow-green flowers appear in clusters during summer.

Rhus typhinais naturally found in eastern North America growing in moist well-drained fertile loams in a open sunny position and is drought tender but frost tolerant.
The Stag's-horn Sumach is grown for its autumn colour and is planted in shrub borders in small garden for screening. It is also planted as a lawn specimen and establishes in 3 to 5 years. It is suitable for cool mountain regions and is planted in woodland settings giving excellent autumn colour. ID 1650
