This deciduous tree forms a trunk with grey brown rough bark and spreading branches forming a broad rounded crown. Its glossy dark green heart-shaped leaves that contain latex and the small green flowers appear before the leaves in spring.

Eucommia ulmoidesis naturally found in central China growing in light to medium loams that are moist and fertile. It prefers a protected sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
