This large tree has an upright greyish trunk with spreading tiered branches that form a rounded crown. It has mid-green ovate leaves that turn orange-red during autumn and the small dull red male and female flowers appear on different trees in spring.

Cercidiphyllum japonicumis naturally found from Japan to China growing in well-drained moist fertile neutral to acidic soils in a sunny to semi shaded wind protected position and is drought and frost tender.

The Katsura Tree is grown for its autumn foliage colour and is planted in parks and gardens as a lawn specimen for summer shade. It is suitable for cool mountain regions and establishes in 3 to 5 years. In China it is grownfor its valuable light timber and is suited to Japanese style gardens or woodland settings. ID 1632

Note:
Under cultivation the tree normally attains a hight of 20m (70ft), but very old trees are much larger with trunks that have a diameter of 4.5m (15ft).
