This bushy suckering shrub has upright and spreading slender stems that form a compact rounded habit. The dark green oblong leaves turn yellowish during autumn and the dull red lily-like fragrant flowers appear during summer.

Calycanthus floridusis naturally found in south-east USA growing in woodlands or on the banks of streams in moist well drained fertile soils. It prefers dappled light but will tolerate full sun in a wind-protected position and drought tender but frost tolerant.

Carolina Allspice is commonly cultivated for its scented flowers and is an excellent specimen for small to medium size gardens or planted in shrub borders. It is also used for autumn colour in woodlands gardens establishing from division in 2 to 3 years. ID 1629

The bark has cinnamon-flavour and was used for seasoning.
